What is a General Plan?

A General Plan is a document the City uses to guide long-term growth. It reflects our community’s vision of the future and sets goals that outline how we live, work, play and get around. These goals include guidelines that describe how our city is intended to look and feel.

Why do we need to update it?

The state of California requires every city to regularly update their General Plan. This requirement is based on the need to have a General Plan that is reflective of community changes, and new challenges and opportunities. In an effort to build strong, cohesive neighborhoods that enhance our community identity, the City of Long Beach would like to hear ideas shared by community members. With your help, the updated General Plan will be an important tool that is reflective of community values.

What does this mean to me?

An updated General Plan will protect the things we cherish about our city while guiding the changes that will improve our lives. A successfully updated Long Beach General Plan reflects the needs and opinions of the entire community to ensure that the Plan supports each neighborhood’s unique identity, and empowers residents to make decisions about priorities in their neighborhoods. This is why it is important for all community members to become actively involved in the General Plan Update.
